I worked as the Lead UX/UI Design resource for RKS Designs collaboration with Hamilton Medical to create the User Experience and User Interface for Hamilton’s Compact Laboratory Pipetting Automation that scales with Medical Lab’s to increase their efficiency.

I worked closely with Hamilton’s internal Software Development team to understand the limitations of their software so that I could design the experience accordingly as well as being imbedded within RKS’s Industrial Design teams to use their form factors and engineering to inform certain elements of the UI to bring real world touch points into the design.

RKS worked with Hamilton to define the Microlab Prep system to identify opportunities to integrate this technology into a small footprint for small to medium-sized laboratories. This new innovative solution enables users to make their workflows faster and more precise by bringing automation to a manually intensive workflow. Microlab Prep provided the category with a compact automated liquid pipetting solution, providing a lab of any size the ability to increase efficiency for users of any skill level to run protocols.

Over 150+ screens designed

I managed a team of 3 designers to build out the user flow and design pattern library to ensure timely hand-offs to the Hamilton Development team. We worked in two week sprints with a share out at the end to ensure adherence to the clients expectations as well as our internal creative direction between the Industrial Design team and Hamilton’s Marketing teams.

Throughout the design and development of the Microlab Prep, we followed a strategic approach to create a user-centric experience. Our multidisciplinary team combined expertise in industrial design, user experience, and workflow solutions to ensure the device’s seamless integration into laboratory environments. We focused on enhancing efficiency, regardless of the user’s skill level, by providing a compact automated liquid pipetting solution. With the Microlab Prep, labs of all sizes can experience increased productivity and accuracy while running various protocols.


The journey of designing and developing this device involved several crucial steps. We conducted in-depth research and analysis to understand the needs and pain points of laboratory professionals. This knowledge formed the foundation for our innovative design, which prioritizes usability, efficiency, and ergonomic considerations. Through iterative prototyping and rigorous testing, we refined the device to deliver a sophisticated and intuitive user experience. The result is the Microlab Prep system, a game-changing solution that transforms laboratory workflows and empowers users to achieve remarkable outcomes.
